NVMe SSD prices: data-centre demand reaches server storage

Data-centre demand is putting pressure on enterprise storage. A closer look at NAND prices and the cost of the next server upgrade.

Enterprise storage has become a more expensive part of the server build. Demand from AI services and data centres has put pressure on supply, with enterprise SSD contract prices rising by approximately 80% in the first quarter of 2026, according to TrendForce.1

That figure describes contracts negotiated by large buyers. It is not an across-the-board increase for every drive on a retailer’s shelf. To understand what is changing, it helps to look at both finished drives and the flash memory inside them.

The NAND price picture

NAND is the flash memory that stores data in an SSD. A published spot quotation for 512Gb TLC NAND rose from $16.310 in January to $20.708 at the end of August, an increase of 27.0% between those observations. By June, the quote was already close to its August level.2

The selected readings show a sharp change from January, followed by much less movement between June and August. They describe one upstream NAND category, not an average price for NVMe drives. A finished drive also needs a controller, firmware, packaging and, in many enterprise designs, its own DRAM.

Why server SSDs face different pressures

A quieter consumer market does not automatically release more enterprise storage. TrendForce’s third-quarter outlook describes manufacturers directing more capacity towards enterprise SSDs. It also identifies limited supplies of the DRAM used inside some drives as a further constraint.3

That leaves buyers comparing two different things: the direction of the wider market and the price of an exact drive they can obtain. The second is what determines the cost of an upgrade.

Large capacity, with the details that matter

Enterprise NVMe can be an interesting option when you need a lot of storage in a small amount of space. A 30.72TB drive is a different proposition from filling a system with several smaller SSDs. But capacity alone is not enough to judge the purchase.

Start with the host connection and the available space. Then look at endurance: how much writing the drive is rated to handle over its specified life. Micron’s 6500 ION, for example, carries different ratings for random and sequential writes—0.3 and 1 drive writes per day respectively. The workload is part of the specification.4

For a used drive, ask for health and wear data from the actual unit. The original endurance rating tells you how the model was designed; it does not tell you how much writing that particular drive has already done. Include any cable, adapter or carrier in the final comparison, along with warranty and delivery.
